Massive gas reserves discovered off Japan's coast, could power millions for decades
Gas hydrates and free gas accumulation in the Nankai Trough were studied using seismic data. Gas migrates to the BSRs in the accretionary prism and forearc basins, with most having migration origins. BSRs are more developed in larger prisms, indicating tectonic control. In the forearc basins, BSRs are found at topographic highs and basin margins due to structural control. BSR distribution is influenced by permeable sand layers and time for gas accumulation, showing sedimentary and time controls. The study suggests that structural, tectonic, sedimentary, and time factors determine BSR distribution in the Nankai Trough.
