Aquatic plants boost biodiversity in Florida lakes, benefiting ecosystem health.
Aquatic plants in Florida lakes attract more types of small water creatures than open water areas. In two lakes, more invertebrates were found in plant-filled areas than in open water. The number and weight of these creatures varied between different areas and times. In one lake, more invertebrates were in open water due to certain insects, while in another lake, more were in plant areas. The type of lake bottom also affected the number of invertebrates, with more found in areas with firm ground compared to soft, organic ground. Overall, plant-filled areas had more invertebrates than open water areas when the bottom was similar.
