Ammonium pollution hinders ocean plant growth, threatening marine ecosystems.
Ammonium affects how marine plants use nitrate. Adding ammonium reduces the activity of enzymes that help plants use nitrate, but not right away. It takes 24 hours for the enzyme activity to decrease. Ammonium also slows down how fast plants take up nitrate from the water. The effects on enzyme activity and nitrate uptake happen at different times, suggesting that ammonium affects two separate steps in the process.
