Indian soils show potential to save irrigation water with new model.
Soil water balance models help plan agriculture and water resources. Indian soils have different water storage limits like field capacity and wilting point. A method was used to estimate these limits for different soil types in India. The estimates were tested in a case study area and showed potential for saving irrigation water. Comparing Indian and US soils, field capacity values were similar, but wilting point values differed more in finer soils due to clay, minerals, and organic matter.
