Male Nile tilapia prefer lighter substratum for nesting, impacting breeding success.
Male Nile tilapia prefer to dig nests in lighter and more homogeneous substrates. In a study, four different types of substrates were offered to groups of adult Nile tilapia: pure sand, sand and shells, stones, and no substrate. The results showed that males chose to nest in a lighter and more homogeneous substrate.
