New discovery: Detergent boosts photosynthesis efficiency in chloroplasts!
Triton detergent affects chloroplasts by speeding up certain processes and changing electron flow rates. Low Triton concentrations speed up cytochrome b6 reduction and cytochrome b-559 oxidation. Higher concentrations increase electron flow rates and lead to almost complete cytochrome b-559 oxidation. Chloroplasts treated with 0.1% Triton rely on it for their photochemical activity. The study suggests a sequence of electron carriers in relation to Photosystem I: cytochrome b-559, cytochrome f, plastocyanin, P700, Photosystem I, cytochrome b6.
