Fructose Reigns Supreme: New Insights into Apple Tissue Cultures' Sugar Preferences
The researchers compared the growth of plant cell cultures from different apple varieties using various sugars. They found that fructose was the most effective sugar for growth, but sorbitol, glucose, and sucrose also worked well. Sucrose was the main sugar found in the cultures, except when grown on high sorbitol concentrations. Cultures grown on higher sugar concentrations accumulated sorbitol, while those on lower concentrations did not.
