The study tested two hypotheses about how the number of species in a habitat relates to the number of individuals. They looked at small water pools with different amounts of creatures. In pools with few creatures, more species were found. But in pools with lots of creatures, fewer species were present. This shows that as the number of individuals increases, it becomes harder for new species to join the community.
