Midwest Braces for Devastating Summer Heat Waves as Climate Models Predict Alarming Warming
Scientists used a detailed computer model to study current and future summer climates in the U.S. They found that this model, called CMM5, is better at predicting U.S. climate than the main model it's based on (PCM), especially for rainfall patterns. The CMM5 showed a unique "warming hole" over the central U.S. in the future, different from PCM's prediction. The study revealed that improving the CMM5's representation of convective processes helps it better simulate U.S. weather patterns. This suggests that the detailed CMM5 model can enhance our understanding of current and future changes in regional climates compared to the larger-scale PCM model.
