New method removes fishy odor from eggs by screening rapeseed seeds.
The researchers developed a method to identify seeds and cotyledons of rapeseed plants with low sinapine levels. Sinapine is a compound that can cause a fishy or crabby odor in eggs from hens fed rapeseed meal. Their method involves a quick extraction process, separating sinapine using chromatography, and visually detecting its fluorescence. This method can detect sinapine levels as low as 0.025 μg and allows for screening of 300-400 seed samples daily.
