Abandoning Crops for Rangelands in Jordan Leads to Soil Erosion Spike.
Land cover changes in northern Jordan have led to increased soil erosion in agricultural areas. By analyzing data from 1992 to 2009 using satellite images and GIS, researchers found that the main cause of soil erosion was the conversion of rainfed crops to rangelands. The average soil loss in the study area decreased slightly from 1992 to 2009, but the risk of erosion varied significantly due to changes in land cover. This study shows that changes in land use have a significant impact on soil erosion rates in the region.
