Subsoil potassium not crucial for wheat yield in Western Australia.
Duplex soils in Western Australia can have potassium in the deeper layers, but current soil tests only look at the top 10 cm. A study on wheat fields found that the potassium in the subsoil didn't have a big impact on crop yield. Even when considering the distribution of roots, the subsoil potassium wasn't as important as expected. Testing the topsoil alone can still detect potassium deficiency in these soils.
