Managers balance exploring new opportunities and exploiting current assets through strategic actions for business success.
This article looks at how managers balance exploring new ideas and exploiting current strategies in organizations to stay competitive. The researchers studied how managers in 13 companies make decisions to adapt to changes to improve their businesses. They found that choices made by leaders in how they set up their organizations and how they work with their senior teams play a big role in whether they succeed in being adaptable. By interviewing managers and looking at real-life cases, the researchers discovered that certain actions taken by managers can either help or hinder their efforts to create organizations that are good at both exploring new opportunities and making the most of what they already have.
