Intertidal amphipods in North Carolina reveal surprising feeding habits.
Neohaustorius schmitzi and Haustorius sp. are two types of small creatures that live on sandy beaches in North Carolina. They have similar mouth parts, but Haustorius sp. is bigger and eats larger things like tiny animals and plant pieces. Both creatures mainly eat detritus, which is decaying organic matter. In lab tests, they eat often and produce fecal pellets regularly. The size difference between the two creatures helps them each have their own food sources, even though they eat similar things.
