New method reveals underground water flow secrets, impacting groundwater management.
The ratio of how easily water flows sideways compared to up and down in an underground area can be figured out by looking at data from wells. Scientists in Wisconsin studied this by comparing actual water levels in wells to what they would expect if the wells went all the way through the ground. They found that the sideways flow was between 2 and 20 times faster than the up and down flow in the area they looked at.
