Submerged plant offers hope for cleaning arsenic-contaminated water sources.
A study looked at using a plant called Vallisneria natans to clean up water contaminated with arsenic. They found that this plant can absorb a lot of arsenic without being harmed. The amount of arsenic in the water and how long the plant is exposed to it affect how much arsenic the plant absorbs. The plant can change the form of arsenic it absorbs to make it less harmful. When there is enough phosphorus in the water, the plant absorbs less arsenic. This research was funded by the Special Fund for Agro-scientific Research in the Public Interest.
