Diabetic rats show improved response to low calcium levels.
The study looked at how parathyroid hormone levels change in rats with diabetes and low calcium diets. They found that diabetic rats had higher levels of parathyroid hormone compared to healthy rats. This shows that diabetic rats respond appropriately to low calcium levels by increasing parathyroid hormone. The researchers also discovered that the calcium absorption issues in diabetic rats are not due to a problem with how parathyroid hormone regulates vitamin D metabolism.
