Newly Discovered Bacterium Challenges Understanding of Photosynthesis in Marine Environments.
Erythrobacter litoralis HTCC2594, a bacterium that doesn't do photosynthesis, had its complete genome sequenced. This bacterium, found in seawater, lacks the ability to do aerobic anoxygenic phototrophy and doesn't have the genes needed for making bacteriochlorophyll a or photosynthetic reaction center proteins.
