Grass-Suppressing Herbicide Reduces Competition, Boosts White Clover Growth in Fields
White clover seedlings were planted in plots of eight different grass species to see how well they grew. Some grass species like Festuca rubra and Poa pratensis allowed clover to grow well, while others like Dactylis glomerata and Lolium perenne didn't. When a grass-suppressing herbicide called propyzamide was used, it reduced grass growth by more than 50%. However, it didn't have a big lasting benefit for clover growth, except in some cases like Agrostis stolonifera and Phleum pratense. Overall, the clover contributed a lot to the total plant yield, even though there were only a few clover seedlings. More research is needed to better understand how to control grass growth and promote clover growth.
