Bogs' Vertical Zonation Reveals Mosses' Adaptation to Changing Environments
The study looked at different types of mosses in two bogs in New York to see how they grow vertically. They found that the height of the mosses varied depending on the bog and the type of moss. Mosses in a drier bog with more hummocks were taller than those in a wetter bog with fewer hummocks. The mosses on the slopes of the hummocks were not affected by which direction they faced. Mosses on hummocks had a wider range of heights and overlapped more with other species than those in hollows. Overall, mosses on hummocks had a greater ability to grow at different heights compared to those in hollows.
