New model accurately predicts runoff and soil loss rates in crops.
The WEPP hillslope model was tested using natural runoff plot data to predict runoff and soil loss under different crop conditions. The model accurately predicted runoff volumes for various events and cropping scenarios, with a coefficient of determination of 0.77. Soil loss predictions were also fairly accurate, with a coefficient of determination of 0.36. The model slightly overpredicted for small storms and underpredicted for large storms, but overall, it effectively predicted average runoff and soil loss rates for different cropping systems. The study concluded that the WEPP model is a useful tool for predicting runoff and soil loss rates in cropped areas.
