Astronomers Unlock Cosmic Distance Secrets, Revolutionizing Cosmic Mapping
Linear regression methods in astronomy were compared to find the best fit for bivariate data with unknown errors. Five methods were discussed, with formulas provided for calculating coefficients and uncertainties. The OLS bisector was found to perform better for symmetrical treatment of variables compared to orthogonal or reduced major-axis regression. These methods are crucial in cosmic distance scale applications in observational astronomy.
