Urban sprawl in the US has been increasing, and this study looked at how local land-use controls affect it. Controls that make developers pay more reduce sprawl, while those requiring low densities increase it. Containment systems have limited effects. Regions with property tax funding tend to sprawl more than those with broader tax bases.
