Roll call voting in different issue areas is influenced by issue salience, but also by factors like party competition and resources available to legislators. The study looked at 15 issue areas in five legislative chambers across four US states, finding that influences on roll call voting vary depending on the importance of the issue. Chamber differences suggest that political environment features play a significant role in understanding what influences how legislators vote.
