Japan has been exploring ways to address climate change on a global scale, even though it chose not to participate in the Kyoto Protocol in 2011. They have been working on domestic emissions trading schemes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One of their approaches is the Joint Crediting Mechanism, which will be in place until a new international agreement on climate change is reached.
