Coastal wind waves significantly impact ocean currents in South Atlantic Bight.
The study looked at how waves and winds interact to affect ocean currents in the South Atlantic Bight. By using computer models, the researchers found that wind waves can change currents by increasing or decreasing their strength at the surface and near the seabed. The impact of waves on currents depends on whether they enhance wind stress or modify bottom stress. In coastal areas with constant winds, bottom stress from waves has a bigger effect on currents when winds blow along the shore compared to across the shore.
