Ozone exposure turning beech leaves into drought-resistant superstars!
The study looked at how ozone and light affect young beech trees. They exposed the trees to different ozone levels for several months. The leaves showed signs of becoming more adapted to dry conditions, especially with lots of light. The changes in leaf tissue suggest that ozone might be causing the trees to experience water stress. Under a microscope, the parts of the leaf responsible for photosynthesis seemed to be aging.
