Preterm Infants Thrive on Low-EPA Fish Oil Supplement, Boosting Brain and Vision Development
Preterm infants need essential fatty acids like DHA for their brain and eye development. A study compared preterm infants fed with fish oil-enriched formula to those fed standard formula. The fish oil-enriched formula increased DHA levels in infants' blood cells, but also raised eicosapentaenoic acid levels and lowered arachidonic acid levels. This suggests that preterm infants may need both DHA and arachidonic acid for optimal fatty acid status similar to breastfed infants.
