Disturbed hormone regulation in rare syndrome linked to bone health.
Patients with Gitelman syndrome have low calcium levels in their blood, but their parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D levels are similar to healthy individuals. This suggests that magnesium depletion may blunt PTH secretion and not interfere with the activation of vitamin D. Despite these hormonal changes, bone mineral density in patients is similar to healthy individuals, indicating that they do not have chronically negative calcium balance.
