Pre-sowing herbicide reduces need for post-emergence weed control in wheat.
Effective weed control in no-till winter wheat can be achieved by using pre-sowing herbicides to reduce weed density. Post-emergence herbicides may not be necessary if weeds are controlled before wheat sowing. This study found that sowing wheat after most weeds had emerged and using a pre-sowing herbicide significantly reduced weed density. Without post-emergence weed control, wheat yield increased compared to sowing without weed emergence. In Mediterranean conditions, it is possible to avoid post-emergence herbicide applications in no-till wheat by efficiently controlling weeds before sowing.
