Barrier island erosion threatens coastal communities in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The researchers studied how sand moves along a 43 km barrier island at Malpeque, Prince Edward Island. They used wave data to figure out how much sand moves along the shore each year. The sand mostly moves southeast, at rates between 40,000 to over 200,000 cubic meters per year. They found that most of the sand comes from erosion in the underwater part of the beach.
