Farmers' willingness to preserve habitat may outweigh costs, benefiting environment
The study looked at how much people are willing to pay to preserve habitat along the Garonne River in France, and how much landowners would accept to give up part of their land for this purpose. The results showed that people were willing to pay more when asked in an open-ended way compared to closed-ended questions. When accounting for zero responses, the willingness to pay decreased by half. Landowners who were farmers tended to ask for amounts similar to their crop revenues. Some farmers were already preserving habitat for free. Overall, the benefits of preserving the habitat seemed to outweigh the costs.
