Conservation tillage reduces soil erosion, but lowers crop yields.
The study compared different ways of farming corn and soybeans to see which one is best for preventing soil erosion, maintaining crop production, and managing costs. They tested seven methods, including traditional plowing and newer conservation techniques. The conservation methods were better at stopping soil loss from heavy rain, but they tended to produce slightly lower crop yields. Surprisingly, the overall costs were similar for all methods. This shows that using conservation tillage is crucial for protecting the soil, even though it may have some drawbacks for farmers.
