China's Rapid Growth Despite Lack of Economic Freedom Stuns Experts
Improvements in economic freedom are usually linked to higher economic growth, but China's rapid growth doesn't follow this pattern. Despite its strong economy, China lacks economic freedom, a solid legal system, and battles corruption. China's economic freedom rating is lower than the global average and hasn't improved over time. In the 2008 Index of Economic Freedom, China ranked 124th, showing it's an exception in terms of law, institutions, economic freedom, and growth.
