Excess cortisol linked to bone loss and mineral imbalance in Cushing's syndrome.
The study looked at how too much of a hormone called cortisol affects the balance of calcium and phosphorus in the body. They found that when cortisol levels went back to normal, the body started reabsorbing more phosphorus and the levels of a hormone called PTH decreased. The levels of vitamin D in the body also changed, with one form decreasing significantly. This change in vitamin D levels was linked to lower phosphorus levels in the blood. Overall, high cortisol levels can lead to bone loss and problems with calcium and phosphorus in the body.
