High prenatal lead exposure linked to lower cognitive development in infants.
The study looked at how lead exposure before and after birth affects babies' brain development. They measured lead levels in babies' blood and tested their cognitive skills every six months for two years. Babies with higher lead exposure before birth scored lower on cognitive tests compared to those with lower exposure. Lead levels after birth didn't seem to affect their scores. Even low levels of lead in the blood can harm a baby's brain development, not just higher levels as previously thought.
