Roadside Vegetation Thrives Without Costly Topsoil, Boosting Sustainability
The study looked at different methods to grow plants on newly made roadside areas without adding topsoil. They tested adding nutrients and lime directly to the soil, tilling the soil first or adding a thin layer of topsoil. The researchers found that tilling the soil and adding nutrients helped plants grow better compared to just adding topsoil. Tilled soil also prevented erosion. Mixing nutrients directly into the soil and roughening the surface improved soil quality, making it easier for plants to grow. In the end, they found that tilling the soil with added nutrients can be a good alternative to more expensive topsoil for growing plants on road cuts.
