By analyzing different options like timing, storage, and application methods, researchers found that optimizing manure allocation in time and space, having three months of storage, and surface-applying manure can reduce phosphorus loss by 45% with only a small cost increase of less than 2%. This means that by making these changes, the farm can protect the environment better without spending much more money.
