Grasstree fire history reconstructions challenge understanding of past fire regimes.
A study on fire history in south-western Australian forests using grasstree records found inconsistencies in individual grasstree fire histories. Some grasstrees were not burnt by known fires, while others were burned multiple times. The records also suggest an increase in fire patchiness since 1930, contrary to previous beliefs about Aboriginal fire regimes. This calls into question the reliability of using grasstree records to understand past fire patterns in diverse ecosystems before European settlement.
