Empowering Communities to Tackle Water Poverty through Holistic Measurement
The Water Poverty Index (WPI) was created to help measure water stress in households and communities. It combines different data related to water access, quantity, quality, and management into one number. The index was developed through projects in South Africa, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka with input from various stakeholders. The WPI aims to assist decision makers in prioritizing water interventions and involving local communities in the process. It can be used to identify areas in need of water-related help and improve how development budgets are allocated.
