New Study Reveals Herbicide Impact on Plant Nitrogen Metabolism
The researchers studied how a herbicide called phosphinothricin affects nitrogen metabolism in plants. They found that the herbicide quickly reduces the activity of an important enzyme called glutamine synthetase, leading to a buildup of ammonia in the plant. Other enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism were also affected, but their changes took longer to appear. This shows that phosphinothricin mainly targets glutamine synthetase, causing long-term changes in other processes.
