Forested Watersheds Provide Better Water Quality Than Agricultural Areas in Texas.
The study looked at water quality in forested areas of East Texas from 1977 to 1980. They found that nitrate-nitrite nitrogen, total kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, chloride, and total suspended sediment levels were within safe limits for public water supplies. Forested areas had better water quality than agricultural areas. Watersheds with more pasture, steeper slopes, more streams, and denser drainage had higher levels of these chemicals in water samples. Equations were created to estimate chemical levels in different watersheds with good accuracy.
