Risk assessment models are not just for estimating exposure and effects anymore. They can also help design and interpret risk assessments, improving the process and advice to risk managers. By using models to better understand uncertainties and offsite risks, and to predict future risks of new technologies, we can make risk assessments more rigorous and transparent. However, there are challenges in implementing these new modeling opportunities due to organizational and conceptual limitations.
