Canine Sperm Stays Viable for Hours After Removal, Boosting Breeding Potential
The research looked at how the time between removing the canine epididymis and cooling it affects the quality of sperm after thawing. Sperm from the epididymis stored at 4°C or 20°C for 6 hours showed similar motility. But storing it at 20°C for 12 hours or longer decreased sperm motility compared to 4°C. Sperm quality after thawing from the caudal epididymides stored at 20°C for 0 or 6 hours and then at 4°C for 24 hours was similar. Thus, keeping the canine epididymis at 20°C for up to 6 hours after removal may not greatly affect the quality of thawed caudal epididymal sperm.
