Ghrelin Hormone Boosts Appetite, Paving Way for Obesity Treatment
Ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates growth, was studied to see how it affects the brain. Researchers found that when ghrelin was given to rats in the brain, it increased the levels of a gene called AGRP in the hypothalamus. This led to the rats eating more food. However, ghrelin did not affect the release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. This shows that ghrelin can make rats eat more by changing gene levels in the brain, rather than by releasing growth hormone.
