High salinity water mass discovered in Cascadia Basin challenges previous studies
Researchers studied the circulation and properties of deep water in Cascadia Basin. They found a high-salinity water mass near the Blanco Fracture Zone, indicating a cyclonic circulation pattern in the basin. The temperature-salinity relationship shifts from northern to southern waters near the seafloor, making it tricky to interpret temperature anomalies. They redefined the temperature anomaly caused by geothermal activity and estimated a one-year residence time for the bottom water, shorter than previously thought.
