Recycling paper, glass, steel, and aluminum is better for the environment than burning them. For cardboard and plastic, it depends on how much energy is recovered from burning them. Transporting recyclables long distances is okay if done efficiently. Some materials in household waste don't make a big difference when recycled due to their low content.
