Hydro-electric water level fluctuations in Lake Hawea lead to algae domination.
Artificially changing water levels in Lake Hawea affects the plants and animals living in the lake. One lake with big water level changes had more green algae and less plants than another lake with smaller changes. Surprisingly, the lake with more algae had more bugs living in it, even though there were fewer plants for them to eat. This shows that changing water levels can impact the lake's ecosystem by reducing plant growth but increasing algae and bug populations.
