Sudanese edible oils contaminated with aflatoxins, posing health risks.
A study in Sudan tested groundnut, sesame, and cottonseed oils for aflatoxin levels using a method called high performance liquid chromatography. Aflatoxin B1 was found in 14.3% of the samples, with sesame oil having the highest contamination rate. Aflatoxin levels in contaminated samples ranged from 0.2-0.8 μg/kg in sesame oil and 0.6 μg/kg in groundnut oil. Cottonseed oil did not show any aflatoxin contamination. All contaminated samples were unrefined. This study is the first to investigate aflatoxin presence in Sudanese edible oils from three different states.
