Optimum roughage level boosts early-weaned calf growth and health.
The researchers studied how different levels of roughage in the diet of early-weaned calves affect their food intake and weight gain. They found that including chopped straw in the calves' diet increased their food intake and weight gain, but too much straw (320g) could decrease these. The best amount of fiber for maximizing weight gain was 150g per kg of diet (equivalent to 220g of chopped straw per kg).
